Do you doodle (old fashioned way with pen and paper, not online)? What is it that?

you draw? Is it the same thing repeatedly, a creative mural on your page, words and symbols? When do you find that you doodle most, and why do you think you do it?

For me, I doodle mostly geometric designs, usually very symetrical. Sometimes flowers, but mostly just lines and angles and shading. Why these? Likely because I find them least revealing (in case anyone in the meeting is peeking). Why doodle at all? I think it's because I'm bored. I could go off into a daydream, but would lose track of the real meeting or class lecture. So, I doodle and listen at the same time, and it's enough to make the time pass.

How about you?

Hi Cats!

I don't doodle at all. Not sure why but I know it gets under my skin when someone doodles on my materials; like my personal phone book, my notebooks, my calender, or even my grocery list. Sounds kind of territorial doesn't it?

What is funny though, is when I give my name and address over the phone, I also write it down. LOL

I do a lot of writing by hand, even when I do my letters for work, I write it all down, cross out, redo, etc.,then I go and type it. I much prefer it to typing. So I guess I am more of a writer than a doodler? (shrug)

I never thought about it before, I wonder if it "says" something about my personality?
Reply:What do I doodle?..

Most of the time at work when I am on a phone conversation and am feeling a bit bored, frusterated, or goofy.. I doodle a face.. two big goofy egg shaped eyes next to each other.. then a smaller sized on the side egg shape nose.. and then the mouth.. which is either a big smiley.. or a zig-zag mark depending on my mood of the conversation.. kind of like a porttait of whomever I am speaking to and how I felt about the conversation....

But I sometimes doodle flowers too.. just the tranquil loops to make the petals is soothing...

Why..? I dunno??.. It's an unconscience thought while I am doing it... it just happens..
Reply:yes, the geometric designs come up quite often: frequently it's a five or six-pointed star. sometimes a border around the outside of a page consisting of a series of figures.

i also do it absent-mindedly, usually without being aware of it. i'm aware that i have pen and paper, but i am not paying attention to WHAT i am doodling until i look down and see.

i don't have the ready access to pen and paper YOU do, but if i do, it's MY version of chewing gum or smoking: something to occupy myself for a while...
Reply:Lines.

Parallel lines.

Short ones, long ones. End to end. More below them.

Hard to describe, but they end up with paths through them, like a maze.

Whole sheets of them when on the phone.
Reply:Mostly on the phone. I tend to write down things that we're talking about - just little snippets - or a date or my name and put boxes around them. Otherwise, I start with a box and start dividing it with lines going through the center. I was told once that the box is an attempt to control things. Who really knows? I just use it like you do - so that I am still listening.
Reply:I doodle spirals when on the phone
Reply:MARKS ON PAPER ARE THE CREATIVE THOUGHTS WE ALL HAVE

WALT DISNEY USED TO DOODLE AND LOOK WHERE THAT'S AT NOW

GO FOR IT
Reply:Usually when I'm on the phone I doodle or when I'm trying to think up a new slogan for a promotion. I draw round and circular sketches mainly but sometimes I will also draw sharp or jagged doodles, I think it depends on my mood really. Some how doodling allows me to express how I'm feeling without having to say anything.
Reply:When I doodle it is normally squares of equal size, done without taking the pen off the paper.

I draw the first one, and then each subsequent one has to be adjacent to to a previous one, using at least one side of a previous square as one of the new squares sides.

It's sort of a game I play with myself, to see how many squares I can draw in this manner - I am not allowed to retrace over a line, so it is possible to get boxed in and unable to make another move.

Of course, theoretically it is possible to keep going forever- but when you're only giving it a small amount of your attention whilst talking on the phone, sat in a meeting or whatever, it is surprisingly easy to make a mistake and find the game is over lol

Why do I do this? To pass time and relieve boredom a little I guess.

It is something I have done since I was a kid, and when I look back at my old school books etc, I can find pages full of these little squares and sometimes wonder what it was the teacher was boring me with so much that particular day lol
Reply:Yep i love doodling, i come from quite an artistic background, i love to use pen and pencil, mostly asymmetric curvey shapes, its just a way of expressing my art and stress.
Reply:I like seeing my subconcious thoughts in pictures. Doodling relaxes me. I usually draw clouds.
